In its early stages, liver cancer may be hard to diagnose because many people do not experience any remarkable symptoms. The liver has a great functional reserve, meaning that quite a lot of damage can occur before symptoms appear as well. This is especially unfortunate for patients suffering from chronic liver diseases including hepatitis B and C, cirrhosis, fatty liver, and alcohol-related damage to the liver. By identifying the signs and getting screened where appropriate, it’s possible to detect liver cancer early.

Unexplained Weight Loss

The idea of losing weight through a means other than making changes in one's diet or exercise regime should not be disregarded, especially when weight loss is persistent. It is to be remembered that there are certain symptoms of liver disease such as lack of appetite and feeling full unnecessarily early.

Persistent Tiredness and Weakness

Unexplained fatigue can be associated with a multitude of different ailments, but if this symptom is coupled with symptoms related to the liver, it is necessary to see a doctor. The changes in metabolism that result from some form of liver disease can lead to feeling weak.

Pain or Discomfort in the Upper Abdomen

A mild pain, discomfort, or sensation of pressure in the upper right part of the abdomen can happen due to enlargement of the liver. Some may also feel some heaviness and even lumps in the area.

Jaundice and Changes in Urine

A person with liver failure may notice the whites of the eyes becoming yellow. Other symptoms may include dark urine and pale stools.

Abdominal Swelling

Ascites, or the presence of fluid in the abdomen, can indicate a cause of weight gain referred to as abdominal distension. This phenomenon may arise along with other conditions where the state of the liver becomes complicated in any way.

Who Needs Greater Vigilance?

Having liver disease, such as cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis B and C, can lead to an increase in the risk of developing liver cancer. However, it should be mentioned that the symptoms are not considered as the sole indicator of possible diagnosis. Therefore, anyone exposed to some risky factors may need to go through regular procedures, like liver imaging and blood tests suggested by the doctor.

The signs of liver cancer may not always be present. Thus, it’s important to follow up with those suffering from liver diseases regularly. Any unexpected changes in their body composition such as weight loss or any symptoms related to liver disturbances should be immediately addressed in the medical institution.
