Workaholics Day - July 5th

▴ There is need of work-life balance
Do you feel the need to be busy with your professional work all the time? If your answer is “yes,” then you are a workaholic. Being dedicated to your job is an excellent trait, however, there is something called work-life balance. Try to brush up on that skill to be healthy and happy.

There are many kinds of people at our workplaces. Some are always late, finding some or the other reason not to work or lagging behind in all their responsibilities. Whereas some people are just the opposite. Work is everything to them. They are so dedicated to work that they generally do overtime and even skip their lunch to do work on time. Such people are befitting examples of workaholics.

Workaholics might find difficulty delegating tasks to others and could be often doing more than what is required, unnecessarily doing jobs of the co-workers as well. They are in habit of spending one’s quality personal time on projects on the work front. Well, a little bit of slowing down would not be a bad idea as life should be a healthy mix of work and fun. As the saying goes, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”.

Why do workaholics need to have a fun time as well?

  • If they keep on slogging too much, they will never be able to brush up their leadership, delegation and organizational skills. Also, they would make others lazy. Any organization is a team of people and hence there is no point in slogging alone.
  • Anxiety is a common trait of workaholics. Anxiety ruins health in the long run.
  • With the work from home culture, workaholics have tendencies to stay up until late at night. More screen time means sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation has been linked to poor cognitive skills and impaired brain functions.
  • Since there is less time spent in social life, it affects the happiness quotients of not only workaholics themselves but also their families.

Any kind of addiction is generally not good whether it is alcoholism or workaholism. Days like Workaholics Day are observed to remind individuals to find a healthy balance between work and life so that health and life as a whole is fulfilling. Do not carry work to your bedtime. Do not carry work to your weekends or vacations. Do not let work hurt your relationships. Step away from work a bit. Take it easy. Life of yours as well as your loved ones would be much happier and healthier this way.
