The Sound Space – a startup that uses music to renew people’s lives

▴ Renew life with music
Sisters Kamakshi and Vishala Khurana are using music as alternative therapy to heal people and to make them more productive and focused in their goals. They have been trying to make music as part of curriculum in schools, helping professionals to fight corporate blues and adding fresh breath of life in people with cancer.

Music has therapeutic value. It relieves a person from stress and depression. Many musicians at heart with a business-oriented bent of mind are using the power of music as healing tools for people and reaping personal as well as financial satisfaction. Kamakshi and Vishala Khurana’s, The Sound Space is one such venture.

Foundation of the founders

The Sound Space was established in 2010 by the sisters, Kamakshi and Vishala at Mumbai. Music is something that they have heard since they were in their mother’s womb. Their father was a sound healer and musician who sang to their mother everyday while she was pregnant. It was a music loving family and the girls grew up by doing everything musically like learning lessons in rhymes.

The sisters are trained in Indian classical Music as well as Psychology. The Sound Space is a venture which is an amalgamation of both. They are using music as a therapeutic tool for adults as well as children in a bid to resolve issues related to stress, lack of concentration, recovering from trauma, post trauma rehabilitation, as mode of finding inner balance and as a part of treatment plan of some chronic illnesses. Khurana sisters are using music to address emotional, cognitive, social and physical complexities in people.

Principles on which The Sound Space works

Therapy techniques used by siblings are based on Raga-Chikitsa. This technique works on the idea that there is a connection between body, mind and ragas. Their music therapy includes not only music listening but also activities like song writing, discussions on music, singing, playing instruments etc. There are a choice of groups and individual sessions which are customised according to the needs of people.

The Sound Space has tie-ups with several schools, NGOs, corporate houses and cancer hospitals in Mumbai. There are training sessions for teachers, students, NGO staff and caregivers too. All have reported improvement in cognitive skills of theirs as well as the people they are dealing with.

The Sound Space designs recreational programs around music for employees in corporate houses to make the place they work in more fun, engaging, and productive. Therapeutic musical activities are designed for break hours in the office. The sisters also work with children with cancer and help them to cope. Their therapy makes the treatment process more comfortable. Music triggers positive emotions in children suffering from cancer and the children look forward to such sessions.

Kamakshi and Vishala aim to make their venture a global organization that touches heart and every sphere of life of people through therapies and concerts in Indian music whether it is in schools, colleges, offices, hospitals or other community set-ups.
