6 Side effects of consuming too much turmeric

Turmeric is the popular spice of the Indian kitchen. Turmeric has many medicinal properties and it is beneficial in the treatment of many health-related diseases. It can be applied to wounds for quick healing. It is helpful for many things including treating knee pain and heart disease. But do you know that it can also have some serious side effects, so it should be used in limited quantity? It is generally considered completely safe as long as it is not consumed in excess amount. The pregnant woman should not consume too much - There is no doubt that turmeric is a great immunity booster and is generally considered safe for pregnant women but should be consumed in limited quantity. If consumed in large quantities, it can promote the menstruation cycle during pregnancy which can be very much harmful to pregnant ladies.

May affect the digestive system – If you are consuming turmeric, more than the recommended amount, you may suffer from constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, indigestion, and stomachache. It contains a significant amount of oxalate which can increase the risk of gallstones if consumed in excess.

Do not consume in stone problem – Try to avoid turmeric if you suffer from a kidney stone. If you consume turmeric only in the required quantity, it can benefit your body in many ways. However, in case of any kind of problem, do consult a doctor.

It can be a reason for infertility – If men take a large number of turmeric supplements, it could affect testosterone and decrease sperm movement, leading to infertility.

Contraindication with blood-thinning medicines – The curcumin present in turmeric can reduce blood platelets function. Hence it should be avoided by those who are taking blood-thinning medicines like warfarin and coumadin.

May cause iron deficiency – Some compounds present in turmeric can bind with iron. This could lead to a decrease in the body's ability to absorb iron from food, which could lead to iron deficiency.
