Can diabetics eat potatoes?

When it comes to increasing high sugar levels, diabetics have to be very careful about it with certain foods. Well, it is not always about sugar! There are many foods which cause high glucose levels in the diabetic patients. The most well known foods known to increase the sugar levels are as follows- 

  • Mangoes
  • Rice 
  • Potatoes 

These are 3 well known foods which the diabetics need to be careful about. It is important to know the right time and the correct way to consume this food to avoid spikes of glucose and sugar levels in the blood.

Can potatoes increase sugar levels?

Potatoes are a rich source of carbohydrates. They are always avoided by diabetic patients. It has been discovered that they cause imbalance of sugar levels. The whole idea of enjoying potatoes is to control sugar levels by eating them correctly in the right manner. 

Club the potatoes with vegetables to control sugar levels 

A recent study by researchers has proven the relationship between intake of vegetables and incidence of type 2 diabetes which found that those who had the highest total vegetable intake had 21% lower risk of type 2 diabetes. 

A study has found an inverse relationship between vegetable intake and type 2 diabetes, it is found that there is an associated plateaued phase with vegetable intake of 150-250 g/day which helps in controlling blood sugar levels.

A 12-14% lower risk was observed for vegetable intake between 200-400 gms per day. 

Find the right way to prepare your favorite potato dish

Intake of potato fries/chips can cause more harm. It is better to consume potatoes boiled, roasted, and mashed as positive form with incident type 2 diabetes. Studies have found the association between boiled potatoes with diabetes was positive but non-significant. On the other hand, studies have found that potato chips/fries were statistically significant and positively associated with high sugar levels and metabolic health. 

How should diabetic consume potatoes?

Blend up boiled potatoes with salad or veggies for a great meal - This is best for diabetic if they crave potatoes. Potatoes are also vegetables which are enriched with fiber and a lot of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. It is important for diabetics to understand the portion size while consuming potatoes in moderation. Remember, potatoes are high carbohydrate food and can cause spikes in blood glucose levels. Cooking potatoes with vegetables rich in fiber can help lower the glycemic index which is best for diabetes.
