Best foods for your kidney health

Read on to know some healthy options that are good for your kidney

10% of the population worldwide is affected by chronic kidney disease (CKD), and millions die each year because they do not have access to affordable treatment. Chronic kidney disease is a severe public health problem in India, with 1 in 10 people estimated to be suffering from some form of chronic kidney disorder (CKD). About 1,75,000 new cases of kidney failure (stage V CKD) are reported in India each year, severe enough to need dialysis. A healthy lifestyle such as regular exercise, losing weight, a healthy diet, avoiding smoking and alcohol consumption has to be promoted for healthy kidneys.

Food good for your kidney

Water - Drinking water is the best way to keep the water levels in your body balanced. No need to go binge drinking, just have 6-8 glasses a day at a regular interval. If you are more active, you'll need to drink more since you'll be losing water through your sweat as well. Water helps to flush out toxins that can lead to bacterial infection or kidney stones.

Apples - Apples contain a fiber called pectin that has a few key health benefits specifically for kidneys. Pectin lowers certain risk factors for kidney damage, such as high cholesterol and blood sugar. And, as an added bonus, they are a healthy way to curb a sugar craving. High in fiber and anti-inflammatory properties, apples prevent constipation, protect against heart disease.

Mushrooms - Vitamin D is extremely important for those at risk for kidney disease because it helps regulate kidney function. Mushrooms are an excellent source of vitamin D. Drying them upside down in direct sunlight increases vitamin D.

Egg whites - Egg whites and yolks have very different nutritional properties. The whites provide a high-quality protein, which is ideal for whole-body health. However, egg yolks contain phosphorus, which can be dangerous for people with kidney disease. So kidney patients should avoid eating egg yolk.

Cauliflower – Cauliflower is low in oxalates and oxalates have been known to develop kidney stones, hence it is good for kidney patients. Cauliflower adds lots of vitamin C to your plate, along with folate and fiber. In addition, it contains compounds that help your liver neutralize toxic substances.
